Here’s the final tip in this series from Engineer Charles Koo on improving your cybersecurity:

DAY 5: Check the Health of Network Printers. Review and secure your printers, which can range from single-purpose to multifunctional workhorses with scanning and faxing features. Outside of the typical paper jam and routine maintenance tasks like adding reams of paper or swapping out toner cartridges, it’s easy to forget that your printer is an asset that requires security safeguards, especially now, when wireless printers are gaining traction. If a network printer is compromised, much more harm can result than wasted ink/toner or paper from an unauthorized user. Cybercriminals may be able to spy on your networked printer, exploit vulnerabilities and capture documents. Consider how much sensitive information is being printed by your company. Given that multifunctional devices have scanning and faxing capabilities, digital copies of confidential documents stored on those machines are at risk, as well. Remember that the humble printer does not go unnoticed by hackers when they are scanning your network.

Change the default password of your networked printers/multifunctional devices – don’t make it too easy for hackers to take ownership of your printer. Disable unused services. Apply patches and firmware updates on your printers just as you would for servers and workstations. If using wireless printers, make sure the network traffic is encrypted, especially if you are printing sensitive documents.

Being aware is key to information security. When users know hackers’ strategies and tactics, they are better able to protect themselves and the law firm. Small changes – a tough password to crack, checking on network printers, turning off Bluetooth, regularly patching systems and improved security training – can make a big difference in preventing and defending your firm from a cyberattack. Start these tasks on a Monday and by Friday your firm will be on its way to improved network security.
